Wolves 0-2 West Ham: Highlights (and Hope)

Daryl here, still filling the (temporary) void, this time with video.

One of the great things about Wolves being back in the Premier League is that video highlights are suddenly a lot easier to come by. The MotD highlights of yesterday’s game are embedded above.

I watched a somewhat choppy stream yesterday and saw an impressive amount of effort (especially in terms of last ditch defending) and a few promising flashes of quality from Nenad Milijaš.

But the defensive mistakes (especially that tackle Jody Craddock fluffed) and the lack of ruthlessness in front of goal had me a little worried. Hate to say it, but shades of what the Baggies did last year maybe?

There’s still Kevin Doyle to come back at one end, Berra at the other (plus there’s always a chance Zubar could improve and impress?) and Kightly to add to that right flank. So need to start panicking just yet. Next game is coming up fast: Away to Wigan on Tuesday night. Let’s hope we at least give Wigan a better test than the Villa did…

Wolves Video Of The Day – Citizen Richards

Bit of actual Wolves Business first off, Ebanks Blake won Championship Player of the year and Goal of the Season last night, with this Maradonaesque strike against Charlton. Wolves also won Family Club of The Year. Alas, we didn’t win Best Digital Communication, nor best Best Fan Marketing Campaign, a fact of which I am of course astounded by. Her herm.

Off to 1974 now and it’s Wolverhampton Wanderers verses Manchester City in the League Cup Final. Wolves lined up with Pierce, Palmer, Parkin, Bailey (capt), Munro, McAlle, Sunderland, Hibbitt, Richards, Dougan, Wagstaffe leading the line against the Citizens, looking to bring their first league Cup back to the Molineux for the first time for 35 years. This a great video here, it’s really got a sense of history about it, nicely intercut with interviews from Geoff Palmer and Kenny Hibbitt really showing you what it meant to the lads to be out there, playing for their team. I hope this video stays up long enough for some of you to see this, have a bit of a reminisce, or if you’re like me, educate yourself in Wolves’ history. What a day, let’s be hoping for some more like it soon eh?

Wolves Video Of The Day – FA Cup Triumph, when the FA Cup meant something.

Off to 1949 now and to the golden age of Wolves, as we see Billy Wright lift the FA Cup in the Old Gold in a triumphant 3-1 display at a seemingly impossibly large Wembley. Wembley was like a second home to most of Wolves’ players at the time, with the likes of Wright, Johnny Hancocks, Jimmy Mullen and Bert Williams swelling the ranks. In many ways it’s one of the most impressive cup wins in Wolves history due to the fine way in which they reached the final, casting Chesterfield, Sheffield United, Liverpool, West Brom and Manchester United all asunder in their wake as they claimed the cup in fantastic style. It’s great seeing these players in action, I’ve heard the stories, these guys are my father’s idols, it’s not hard to understand why, they were true professionals and gentlemen and hugely successful.

Well that’s enough of an introduction from me, let’s get the video playing.

Wolves Video Of The Day – Time Travelling to 1904

Lovely little video here, if you don’t mind the baggie doing the voice over. It’s part of the Mitchell and Kenyon collection, a couple of men who went round the country documenting every day life on film. One day they decided to take in a game between Wolves and Preston North End. The game itself ends up 2-2 but that’s not really important, it’s just amazing to watch the Wolves team playing a game which took place over 100 years ago. I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have dreamt in their wildest dreams that their images would be being beamed into homes across the world. It’s all rather touching.

Wolves Video Of The Day – Five Star Wolves and our UEFA Heartbreak.

And so the magical mystery tour of Wolves through the echelons of video time continues! However before we waste a bit more of your day we’ve got some actual Wolves news to talk about, Sylvan Ebanks Blake has pulled out of the England U-21 set up with a slight calf strain, I wouldn’t get too worried about that, I think he’s essentially pulling a Gerrard (Pulling out of friendlies and games where he doesn’t fancy flying to) so I think he’ll be ship shape and wrapped in cotton wool in time for the Birmingham game.

Right then! For today’s video, not as good as Honved I’m afraid, but few videos are. Today’s video is from Wolves’ 71-72 season, where you’ll get the good – Wolves knocking 5 past Arsenal, and the bad – Wolves losing against Tottenham. Well at least it was in a UEFA Cup final, I’m sure there are many younger fans who are completely unaware that we were in Europe in that decade. Nice bit of footage to see Derek Dougan in full flow against The Gunners.

Wolves Video Of The Day – The Night Wolves Stunned Europe

I may as well state now that there won’t really be any chronological order to these videos, I didn’t really think it through enough when I thought up the whole idea for this last night, so off we go from the 80s to the 50s (quite a leap I know), where Wolves recorded one of their most famous victories, one which would lead to the creation of the Champions League and lead us to be called by some in the press “The Champions of the World”. It would be Honvéd who would travel to Molineux that night, in a game broadcast live by the BBC. Honvéd were a mighty behemoth of a team at the time, consisting mostly of Hungarian internationals that had recently plundered their way past England twice in recent games. Honvéd took an early 2-0 going into the second half…the rest, is history.
