Wolves have left it late to make their impact on the January transfer window, and in my mind have made a very good move in acquiring Christophe Berra on a four and a half year deal, which is a large lay out for a player, who at 24, looks like he may well be with Wolves for the foreseeable future under this contract. He joins us from Hearts, where he enjoyed the captaincy for some time from the 2007/8 season, and from what I’ve been hearing from Hearts fans, they’re sad to see him go, and rated him as a player and a gentleman. I think he fits the kind of player we need at this stage in our season, and indeed regeneration as a club, while at 6’3” he’s tall enough.

Moxey’s view on the signing –

“There was certainly a time when it didn’t appear as if we would be successful in securing Christophe’s signature, but we stuck to our guns and ultimately managed to complete the deal at the price we wanted”

“With all that finally done and dusted now we can look forward to seeing him play!

“Christophe is a strong and physical defender who Mick has been keeping tabs on for some considerable time – indeed we initially tried to sign him last summer.

“Not only was he an influential captain up at Hearts, he is also a Scottish international, and having just turned 24 possesses the same sort of drive and ambition to succeed as the other members of our young and talented squad.”

I look forward to seeing a partnership between him and Stearman develop, hopefully that leaky defence of recent weeks can be plugged in a similar vein as when Mancienne was bought in on loan, that changed our season, we looked great at as good at the back as in attack, ever since his return to Chelsea we’ve remained potent up front yet comical at the back.

So here’s to Berra!

Good luck lad!

I’ve been staring blankly at the Wolves news page for two days solid now, refreshing every now and again, waiting for something, anything to happen. Nothing had happened for days, so I decided to go and get a haircut, and then literally EVERYTHING happened. So there’s a lesson to all potential bloggers, never go out, never cut your hair. I’m the digital Samson.

First up is the news that Alan Gow has failed his medical. Despite being “well fit” in other respects it turns out the Scot has some biomechanical problems, which basically translates to problems with his bones, whether this is a rheumatoid arthritis type of skeletal problem or a calcium deficiency we just don’t know, but what we do know is that Gow isn’t going to sign for Wolves in this transfer window. I’m not sure if Gow would have failed his medical at many other Championship clubs, because this is a reason for failure that I’ve never heard of, we must have some boffins on the medical staff is all I can suggest.

Elsewhere utility man for hire Michael Gray has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan for 30 days, for some reason, I’m not quite sure, he’s always done a good job for Wolves when called upon, and all I can see this move doing is tiring him out.

Mick McCarthy has issued a classic ner ner ner ner nerrr to Birmingham in saying that he “didn’t even WANT to sign Sinclair ANYWAY cause he totally wouldn’t have even played so WHATEVER!” Or words to that effect.

And finally, The Independent thinks we’ve got five of the top twenty players outside of the Premiership.

It always happens on a Friday?

With the London side in the first stages of selling most of it’s defense, they’re going to need him. We all knew it was coming, perhaps not this soon though. He’s been fantastic over his eight games, and I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing him all the best for the future, and I’m sure it won’t be long till we see him as a regular at the highest level.

On a slightly lighter note, Wolves are interested in Gow, he’s a sort of attacking left sided midfielder/strikery sort of player, and has been very good while on loan with Blackpool, but as they lost Simon Grayson to Leeds, they’ve also lost their minds as they’ve turned down the option to sign him for £200,000.

Not the best start to the transfer window, but here’s hoping Mick can address the loss of Mancienne as quickly as he sorted out his arrival.

Ah, tis but a day until players can actually swap teams in the January sales, if anything, January sales are always a bit disappointing, the teams that make the most noise are always the ones who’s seasons are going tits up, or who’ve got so many injuries they’re struggling to put out a starting XI. So players that usually get bought in January usually have a cracking three months, and then get sold at roughly the same time the year after. There have been some notable exceptions, in recent years with Wolves in particular, with Ebanks and Kightly coming in the January transfer window, and doing rather well indeed.

So it comes as no surprise that it’s Ebanks Blake and Kightly who are being touted around the rumour mill as the next players to make the leap from Championship to Premiership, rather than waiting a few months to try and make it there with Wolves. We’ve also got rumours of Hennessey and Mancienne leaving the squad, off to the promised land of the Premiership, as nothing else exists in football, and every other league is merely there to fill the time in between Premiership games.

Once again, all the transfer news which is doing the rounds is unsubstantiated, un referenced, and to be honest, sounds like it’s been plucked out of the air in many cases, ie – “Everton dahnt hav nah stroikas, they’d probarblay lark tha top skorah of dah chaampionsharp” in my best Dick Van Dyke Fleet Street reporter voice. And “Newcarstle are lark a fakkkin farblin drank in tha attarkin thurd, they’d prhabably lark a duycent wingaaaaaaah”. While “Mancienne’s hacktually fackkin da mutt’s fucks, whart tha FUCK is e’ doin in the Chaarmpionsharp?”

I’ll pick on one article in particular, I chose you, THE SUN! (added annotations once again)

Kinnear hopes to fly a Kight (Slow hand clap for that one)

JOE KINNEAR is ready to launch a £4million bid for Wolves winger Michael Kightly. (According to who? Big Joe? Ashley? I’m sure they’ll clear this up later in the article)
Newcastle boss Kinnear says he needs to spend big next month to secure Toon’s Premier League status. (Ah, yet there are no quotes to support the fact that he said he’d have to do anything)
And (Now I’m sorry, but who starts a sentance with a common conjunction? I know it’s popular now to put two fingers up to the old style of writing, and if you’re in a rush then fair enough, but this guy’s had to write a PARAGRAPH, and yet he’s not bothered to start the sentance with a simple “Joe Kinnear” and take away the “he”) he will take a punt (Hav’ a punt on that you slaaaaag) on players from outside the top flight (Outside the top flight? What the hell is that? There’s football not in the Premiership? They probably had to ask Chris Kamara what the division was called but couldn’t get hold of him).
Kightly, 22, has fired seven goals this term to help Wolves to the top of the Championship (They remembered what it were called). He is also being tracked by Everton (Every one of our players is being tracked by Everton, Moyes is the voyeur of The Championship) and Middlesbrough (The Monaco of the North).

Brilliant, as I’m sure you’ll agree. If I handed that level of unreferenced garbage in at GCSE, let alone Degree Standard, I’d be laughed out of town and asked if I fancied being a lollypop man instead.

So, don’t get too worried about transfer rumours in the coming weeks unless we get one of two things

A QUOTE, off a person, actually to do with the club, I’m only going to accept Manager, or Director. I’m not going to accept the standard Sun lazy “an insider said” as in “we’ve just made up”.
A PICTURE, of the player, wearing the other team’s shirt, a la Incey.

I hope that’s calmed you all down a bit?

Tarra-a-bit

Pre transfer window is a difficult time for most Football journalists, as the hectic January sales have yet to start, they have to ham fistedly latch onto any slice of transfer gossip they hear down the pub, or just start reporting on the most boring and dull happenings. Express and Star really excel at this, as you will see in my round up paragraph below, out of 7 articles from The Express and Star, only one is actually interesting…and it’s not actually that interesting.

Right so here we go, deep breath, Wolves round up in a paragraph.

Right, first off we learn that Wolves are a better side than they were last season. You’d think this bomb shell would be enough for Mick to rest easy, however he still lives in fear of teams outside the top three…obviously, because he’s not utterly naive, however the E&S word it as “Boss fears the outsiders”, like he’s some massive xenophobe. Good news comes in the way of Jarvis being fit, however in good old E&S style this is worded as him being ready to “gatecrash Wolves” like some sort of crazed wingery ram raid presumably. In terms of transfers Wolves, as well as half the teams in the bottom half of the Premiership and the top of the Championship are interested in Scott Sinclair, while Ikeme signs on till 2012, and McCarthy doesn’t want to sell anyone, probably because he thinks every last one of his first XI is so flipping ace. Apart from the B team, if I were them I wouldn’t spend too much this Christmas.

Brilliant, I’ve highlighted the important bit of actual news in between all that faff, pre match report….Friday…ish? I might slip from being totally on the nose in the next two weeks, as not only is it Christmas which involves a lot of travelling, but I’m currently in the midst of a busy University period, that and bankruptcy. Seriously guys, I’m down to my last twenty quid of grand overdraft. If any of you want to post me a tenner for Christmas I’d be loving it more than Kevin Keegan.

Tarra-a-bit!

Some Wolves related football titbits matriculating their way down the grape vine this morning. I’ll start with the good one first, if not that amazingly exciting. Obviously following Denes Rosa’s path of success in Wolverhampton, Hungarian Club Ujpest are considering forming an alliance with us. The internet tells me that Ujpest are one of Hungary’s oldest and most successful clubs, and they play in Purple. Fantastic I guess, this involves their directors coming over and watching a few games and some of their younger players having a chance to train with the squad. I’m not going to say it’s a good or bad thing, but I will say it’s come at a good time to deflect people from that ounce of fiction put forward by The Sun earlier in the week, and for that, it serves a purpose. Though saying that, how long before The Sun say we’ve got “the next Kaka (From Hungary)”.

The other bit of “news” comes from this man on the left, John Toshack, currently seen there pondering what piece of crap to utter from his lips next. Well, he’s got a good track record with Wolves over the last few seasons, he stuck his massive oar in over the whole Freddy Eastwood debacle saying something along the lines of if he wanted a regular place, he needed regular football and therefore a change of club would suit him. And so off Freddy went, and he’s having a belter with Coventry weighing in with 2 goals in the last 15…He did the same with little Rob Earnshaw too. And now here comes the turn of Wayne Hennessey. Toshack’s wisdom this time is that

“Maybe if he is not performing regularly, there could be a move for him in the pipeline”

Yeah. Why exactly? Because we only have two keepers in the first place, he started the season, made a few mistakes, got dropped, and now the other keeper has been outstanding…hmm pretty sure that’s how football works. Or is it because he’s Welsh, and he’s not first choice, at this moment in time which for some reason Toshack can’t stand, and he was obviously bored so he thought he’d stir up a situation which wasn’t there just in time for the January transfer window. Goodness me, this man’s worse than Willie McKay. Hennessey isn’t going anywhere, the transfer fee we’d get for young Wayne would pale in comparison to the money we’d get in if we did win promotion, and in order to get promotion Wayne is a huge part in the Wolves team! Selling him literally makes no sense, no matter how hard other teams try, how hard The Sun wishes upon wish that their “you heard it here first” scoop comes to life, it’s just not going to happen!
And Breathe. It’s been a stressful week of press for Wolves this week, let’s hope we can do the talking on the pitch come Saturday. Preview will be up either tomorrow or Friday.

Tarra-a-bit!

We were helped massively as Mancienne didn’t do much more than look a bit excited on the subs bench all through the England game, which on a side note was rather fun to watch. Scott Carson carrying on his fine England form, it must be all those goals he’s letting in for Sandwell…he’s more used to picking the ball out of his net than saving it obviously. Other players seemed to have had middling games, Iwelumo seemingly not forgiven by Scottish fans because he couldn’t score against a team ranked 27 places above them, luckily though, only getting 45 minutes. Also with 45 minutes under his belt was Dave Edwards, who I half watched on the live stream, playing well and linking up with Ramsey a few times, he’ll also have fresh legs. Keogh got roughly an hour under his belt, while Carlos Edwards had a full game, which coupled with a long flight back will be slightly worrying, though buoyed slightly by the fact that he got himself an assist and looked lively throughout.

In the U21 set up, a place it seems where “managers” suddenly realise that there are good, young, English players not playing in the Premiership reserve teams. Stearman played a blinder, so much so Pearce decided to use a collection of massive football clichés to describe his delight, and a rather confusing one about the contents of his locker. Kightly also had a decent game by all accounts and Blake made his first appearance, getting a good 20 minutes under his belt.

Elsewhere on the Wolves rumour mill, and general paper fodder we have the “news” that we’d rather keep Edwards for the entire period we were promised, Mancienne, obviously spending too much time with John Terry says he sees his future with Chelsea….Just like Johnson, Wright Phillips, Duff….yeah. Also Hennessey “BREAKS HIS SILENCE” I wasn’t aware he’d been silenced personally, but there’s also a nice article about the big man Matt Murray.

Right, get your chops round those links and you’ll have a nice pre match stat-a-thon tomorrow.

Tarra-a-bit!

EDIT!

Living proof that it’s not safe to leave the house longer than a few hours as a Wolves fan, Carlos Edwards has indeed had to return to Sunderland, with some, if not a lot of solace given that Jarvis is on his way back, thought not as soon as we’d all like. Bit of a selection headache come Saturday, and a bit of a disjointed team for the next few big games ahead.

The Sun being the bastian of gossip, let’s endulge ourselves.

Because I love this kind of thing, you know the sort, a mate of a mate works with a guy who used to go out with the daughter of a guy who knew someone who used to do delieveries to Arsenal and they overheard Arsene Wenger talking about signing Hennessey for eight million, with a player coming our way on loan, this young player possibly being Wiltshire (who on the side, is raaather good, fuelling my tutting). This has been a rumour for some time, mind you. I don’t know what to think really…Well, my initial instinct is to say -

“Utter jimmeny balls”. However, as with most of these outrageous one too many pint theories, the bare bones of the story make sense. Hennessey hasn’t played for getting close to a month despite Ikeme and his defence (I’m not putting this all at Carl’s door) have been leaking goals, like a stricken battle ship does water. You’d think that Hennessey would be pushing for his place again, however in the radio interview after the Swansea game when asked about who would be playing on Saturday, McCarthy replied simply “Ikeme”. So it’s an interesting one, are we, protecting our most valuable asset and assessing Murray’s fitness in time for January? Using the millions from his sale to bolster the squad in time for a push to the Premiership?

Who knows, but it must have been a long day because for once one of these mad ramblings seems to be making sense.

In the mean time, you can watch some of Jack Wiltshire, who as I said earlier is rather brilliant, he’s only 16, possibly 17 now, but shows cracking vision. Sorry about the terrible music, people feel compelled to put shitty music over everything these days. But hey, his assist and goal are top notch, just put it on mute.

Or at least it does for Richard Stearman.

It seems that Richard Stearman’s exclusion from last night’s win wasn’t due to any sort of tactical endeavour on McCarthy’s part, rather that Richard Stearman didn’t arrive on time to the ground, having been caught short in the traffic due to the weather round the ground. It seems that Richard will “now have to wait to get back into the team”. This does seem slightly harsh for a player who’s been very consist ant for us since his move in the summer. If it weren’t for his birthday being in August I’d perhaps suggest a new watch, set ten minutes fast…it gets me awake in the morning on time.

<- Stearman, yesterday, possibly in some snow.

Elsewhere news emerged Mancienne was cold last night and that Darren Ward is staying at Watford for another few months. Both spectacular pieces of information which I’m sure shall warm the soul on another freezing October evening.
