Wolves Vs Watford – Match Preview
By: Toby | January 30th, 2009
And so here come Watford, a game not but two months ago that most Wolves fans would say “BRING ON THE TRUMPETS” to, and they’d have been right, if not slightly confusing if they meant that this was a game which we’d be expecting to win, and win comfortably. But no, no dearest readers, these are troubled times indeed for the old gold, because if you were to believe the great orators of football, namely your mate down the pub, the guy who works at Co-Op and the guy who ends every argument with “WELL I’VE GOT A SEASON TICKET SO I THINK I KNOW” like it’s the answer to something then Wolves aren’t actually top the league, four points clear, we’re actually bottom, about to get relegated, go into administration and about to get burned to the ground by Vikings. What we’re suffering from right now, is what I like to call “fevered over reaction to events that haven’t actually got that bad at all” to give it it’s overtly long and not very catchy tag line.
Let’s face it we’ve been far from epic world beaters for a month now, yet we’re still top of the league, and while that argument is great and good while you’re winning, we haven’t really been doing that, we’ve kinda been drawing and losing and not really playing that well, so my “we’re still top of the league” mantra has been wearing thinner by the week, yet I still cling to it, like it means something, because it does, we’re still 4 points clear. If we’ve learnt anything this season it’s that the Championship is the same it’s ever been, any team can beat any team on its day, look at Blackpool doing the double over Birmingham, Swansea beating both ourselves and Reading. There’s a long way to go and there are going to be many more twists and turns in this season, I’m pretty sure about that. What I do know is that we’ve put ourselves in a great position, I’d rather be shaky and top of the table than shaky and in third, we haven’t so much a mountain to climb, moreover a mountain to try and stay on top of until the rest of the season, the hard work is done. We just need to consolidate.
And where is this consolidating going to start? It starts tomorrow at Watford, we need a result, but even more importantly we need a performance. It’s something I’ve been saying for far too long now but I really want to see a game where we take it by the scruff and don’t let go until we come away with a result, hopefully that’s what we’ll see tomorrow.
Squad wise we’ll be sans Collins, who’s on the naughty step for colourful language and perhaps minus Quashie who was looking tired towards the end of the last game. A side from that we’ll be hopefully lining up at full strength, I’d like to see a Vokes and Blake starting line up, or at the very least Blake and Iwelumo, as much as I love Keogh I think it’s time for the return of the big man little man combination.
Elsewhere the Christophe Berra transfer is turning into a saga.
UPDATE – We’ve agreed a fee and he’s on his way down for a medical. How exciting, I’ve been cruising the Heart’s 606 and they rate him off the pitch as a gentleman as much as they do as a player, it’s music to my ears.
Oh so here we go again, fingers crossed, good luck!
Sorry this is so late, I’ve had a job interview today, if you could keep your collective fingers crossed for me that’d be sensational.
Tarra-a-bit!

im just about over the reading debarcle now, and i think this is one of the biggest games of our season in the same way that the away game was.
Hopefully we will have more energy in the middle too with either edwards or jones or dare i say it a fit quashie.
Also how great would a clean sheet be?
id also like to see reid on the bench as he has impressed so far and if jarvis is only able to play 70 mins which it seems he is for the moment, i would like to see a natural wide option on the bench.
as for the forwards i like keogh but i dont think we play to his strengths any more and i agree that we should start with vokes or iwelumo (probably vokes seen as if iwelumo is within 10 yards of the ball its a foul).
i really hope we put in a good performance tomorrow but something tells me with how weve been lately it could be a nervy afternoon.Posted from

Excellent comments, I often comment on other fan sites and you do wonder if many of them understand how a football game is played let alone the rules and complicated mind games players, managers, and media play this time of the season.
Watford your right is a must win, but we are wolves fans, and we all know expect the unexpected, which is a common theme with most clubs of our size and recent history.Top the league is the best place, but to tumble into the play-offs and lose out on promotion is not nice – we have been there before, and it did hurt.I think in the back of our tiny , repressed minds , we fear this , simply because we are not playing in anyway that deserves us to be at the top. So you are right – tomorrow is all about winning and winning well.Posted from

A clean sheet would be amazing steve, beggining to forget what those are like.
And you’re spot on Darren, as Wolves fans we have a history of dissapointments and nearly did its, it does lurk in the back of your head I suppose, I’m a rare thing though, a positive Wolves fan!
