Wolves Vs Plymouth – Match Preview

By: Toby | February 26th, 2009

Oh sweet lord, at last, we play a team who has had a worse 2009 than ourselves. When writing these game previews our recent form stats were a major confidence booster to put down, “seven wins in a row!” “The leagues’ three top scorers!” etc, however that’s all dried up a bit now, we still have the leagues’ top scorer in our ranks, however it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to boast about a winning run. Moreover it’s that albatross around our neck, one win in eleven games which keeps on leering out of the darkness at you when you’re trying to sleep and totting up possible final match day points in your head….is that just me then? Oh. Regardless! Finally we play a team with the record of…wait for it, one win in sixteen! Huzzah! We’re not the worst team in the league. However it does highlight the fact that socks better be pulled up by McCarthy’s men come Saturday, as we’re only five games worse off than run, and Plymouth are twentieth.

Following the performance against Cardiff (discounting the defence of course) we should go into Saturday feeling light, bubbly and hell, confident about coming away with a result. This almost automatically qualifies us for an upset, but let’s push that thought to the back of our minds for now and focus on the positives. We’re still scoring for fun, Ebanks Blake seemingly can’t stop scoring and as we’ll be at home if we turn out the same level of performance as we did against Cardiff in the opening half hour, we’ll be 3-0 up by half time. Also, the defence has had another week to work with each other, more time in training equals more time to work on understanding, I’m sure once that clicks then we’ll soon shore up at the back, it’s only a matter of time.

So to a prediction. This game ended 2-2 on the first day of the season last time we played, and that seems about right if you look at the numbers, 20th placed Plymouth actually have a better defence than us, conceding one less goal than us….Jesus. However! Whereas they’ve mustered to score 31 at the other end, we are riding high with 66 goals for the good, double! Yes that’s right, a stat that we can use before a game to make us feel confident again, so there we are, they might score 2, but law of averages would say that we’ll score 4. So I’m going to go for a truly confident 4-1 to Wolves, followed by a Paul Sturrock sacking. How’s about that for nostradamousesque?

Right then, let’s get out and get behind the lads!

Tarra-a-bit!

(Also, sorry I’m been a bit brief of late, I’ve done something to the muscles in my back which means sitting at my desk to type sends me into quite hilarious spasms…I’m dosing up on drugs and going to the doctor tomorrow, so I’ll get a bit more involved again soon!)

It doesn’t make it much better but it’s one win in 10, not 11. Still embarrassing! From here until the end of the season including the Birmingham game, I’d say if we were playing like we did at Deepdale again, we would win every game. Might as well start now.

Hope your spasms get fixed up – if not I’d like to see the hilarity of them on YouTube ;)

“sitting at my desk to type sends me into quite hilarious spasms…” – the comitment to the cause of the man…

although we looked back to our best at times against cardiff i still think we are a bit away from where wed like to be, ill go for a confidence boosting yet nervey 2-1, and as a non-keogh-hater hopefully he’ll get the winner to ease the pressure on himself a bit

3-0. SEB brace and then vokes or big chris to finish them off. optimistic i know but we can dream of better times. losing is not an option really, it wouldn’t be the end of us but it could really damage confidence

Ah screw it, let’s be optimistic, if we’re wrong we’ll look foolish for a week, if we’re right then we’ll be three points to the good! This is where the rest of the season starts!

Sturrock won’t be sacked if we lose on Saturday. He’s almost certainly there until the end of the season. If he was going to be sacked he would have gone after the Palace game. For better or worse, the Board have entrusted our survival to him – and honestly, I can’t think of anyone else who’ll do a better job.

As for tomorrow, curiously, the pressure is off. No-one expects us to get anything out of the game (Watford on Tuesday is far more crucial in that respect), so that might lead to us playing with a bit more confidence than hitherto. And the green shoots of recovery are starting to appear: Carl Fletcher has made a big difference in the midfield; Seip is back; and the performance against Sheffield Utd was very encouraging. I think you may find it tougher than you anticipate.

We had two nailed-on pens turned down in our last two games – it happens. Most reports reckon Reid dived, anyway.
