Wolves Vs Perth Glory – Match Preview

By: Toby | July 7th, 2009

Semi Breaking NewsChelsea Boss Carlo Ancelotti is willing to let Michael Mancienne come to Wolves on loan for the season. I am very, VERY excited by this. More news as it comes!!

Right then, let’s set the mood for this with a bout of the Australian National anthem.

And what a rousing piece it is. Now, mild xenophobia aside I thought that, while this game is a bit of a meaningless lark around down under it’s non the less a good bit of practice, time to iron the creases out, stretch those muscles which have been getting slack in the off period and pretty much blow away the cobwebs…and that’s just me. For Wolves, it represents the chance for the new signings to have a bit of a bonding session. I can see it now, Kevin Doyle sharing Elokobi’s I-pod…(which would probably just consist of the sounds of very very heavy things being thrown against other heavy things.) Milijas playing top trumps with Hennessey and Surman and Halford playing British Bull dog with Kightly and Jarvis. It’ll be a veritable love in, which is why it’s a good thing that we’ve got two games to play while the team are larking around.

First up are Perth Glory, now, I’m at a bit of a loss as to how good a side they are, but here’s a very good blog about them. Perth as a quick google tells me are a side which have finished 7th in their league for the past three seasons, in a league which seemingly only has eight teams. They’ve recently acquired 34 year old Andy Todd from Derby? I’m clutching at straws here. Either way, it should be nice to see some football again, I’m going to try my very very internet hardest to see if I can track down some footage of the game, if anyone’s rolling a camera I’ll try and find it!

A quick shout to anyone who’s going to the games and if they fancy writing a bit about it (don’t feel pressurised at all….but I will require 1000 words and for it to be submitted 5 minutes after full time) I am of course joking, a paragraph will do me, just let us know how the new lads are getting on and I’ll pad it out with pictures. Deal? Email me at toblerone705[at]hotmail.com but obviously with an @ sign.

Well, have fun those of you who are going, I’ve had an email off one of your number by the name of Shaun, and he says that if any of you are going and would like to meet, there shall be a group of Wolves fans at the Brisbane Hotel, corner of Beaufort and Brisbane street in Northbridge. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the ground, so there you go!

If you want match updates, follow this Perth fan’s twitter for updates!

Till then, tarra-a-bit!

    Hiya Toby

That’s a nice picture of an AFL football ground. The Members Equity Stadium is more like an open to the elements ground with about 18,000 capacity and basic to say the least. It does have an all standing end though that provides a good atmosphere!! And you can drink beer all the way through the game. What a country…

    Hi Toby from FM-LLM,

As I may have mentioned I’m a wolves fan down under and as I live in Perth have some knowledge on the subject.

Yes that is the 40 000 seat Australian Football ground, that sport that steals oxygen from the true football, which is the source of no end of argument with some of my friends.

Glory are a team with a proud history in the old National Soccer League, we were far and away the most succesful team from the late 90s until the league folded in the mid 2000s. Since the league was relaunched (as new football not old soccer) with one team per city (to avoid some of the ethnic violence in old soccer) Glory were the only team to survive as a franchise. They were, in all honesty, pretty poorly managed in their 1st couple of years, especially after our owner sold the license to the Football Association, and have only recently got some stability. Last season was one of transition, and we’ve recruited well (as well as Todd we’ve brought in Jelic from the Bundesliga and Mile Sterjovski who is a first choice Australian player). One of our youth products Nikita Rukyavitsa was sold to FC Twente in Holland last year which helped fund this. There is excitement amongst Glory fans for this season, especially if we sign Chris Coyne (another Australian player) as our defence is probably our shakiest part at the minute.

Members equity is indeed in need of a revamp, it’s nothing like Molineux, or even Clyde’s Scottish 1st division stadium in Glasgow (which I graced last year), 3 sides are open, one end is all standing (including a tin roof, where our ‘ultras’ The Shed, sit). The shed are our organised fan group, but there is no trouble with violence etc at football games in Perth.

I’m going to the game and so would be honoured to do a guest stint on your blog with a report from a Glory and a Wolves perspective. Sorry for the novel.

I am a life long Wolves fan (previously from Bilston) who now lives in Melbourne. I will be flying into Perth on Thursday 9th with 3 aussie mates who I am converting into Wolves fans from Aussie Rules rubbish! There are also about 50 NSW wolves fans flying across for both games. I have seen that there are 2 big meet ups planned as follows:-

    Thursday 9th – Brisbane Hotel

Friday 10th (pre-game) – Northbridge Hotel nearer to the ground and allow football shirts

If any of you see Tim Nash from the E&S, tell him to get a new camera and to film something interesting, rather than his mug.

I’ve changed the picture of the stadium! Pretty sure this one is the stadium, it even has the name written on it!

Ah Tim Nash, if anyone wants to pay for me to fly to Australia, I’ve got a better camera than he does and I won’t start every sentence with “errrrrrrrrrrrrr”

My Chelsea mate has text me over night saying it is common knowledge that Mancienne is coming to the Wolves on a year long loan.
Has there been any confirmation of this.

    STAYING UP I TELLS YA!

its being banded about pretty much by most sources so i’d say it was pretty much confirmed. they dont want to sell which is understandable, but he likes us, knows the team and can prove himself in the premiership with us. definitely a great loan and will shore up our weakest area combined with other signings.

the have to admit, the 3 M’s have done everything i expected of them so far this transfer period. if macienne comes off then we are done in my eyes, anything else would be a bonus!

This is the first bit of transfer news that’s got me really excited! The memories of our defence with him at the heart of it are flooding back.

His performances at the u21s smacked of a player who hadn’t had a competitive game in 6 months.

Well best hope we can get him soon for training with us because I don’t fancy starting with him on the back of those performances!
