Wolves Vs Charlton – Match Preview
By: Toby | March 13th, 2009
And so to a top verses bottom at Molineux on Saturday, as Wolves take on Charlton in a game which makes me get a little bit jittery thinking how badly this could go. It’s one of those games where there are really no winners, if we win, it’s what everyone expected we’d do anyway and we’ve consigned one of the nicer clubs further into the mire of relegation…everyone thinks we’re heartless bastards. We lose or draw, our own fans will declare this the end of the season, start ripping up season tickets and writing suicide notes, thinking up new alliteration for Mick, “mad Mick”, “muppet Mick” “mostly mistaken mentally messed Mick” which they can reel off and vent at whoever is unfortunate enough to sit next to them at work on a Monday.
So you know what I mean? It’s one of those games. It’s one of those games where I’ll say “on paper” because on paper, we should absolutely smash Charlton. They’ve conceded 63 goals (31 of those on their travels), we’ve scored 68 (37 of those at home). We should see a cricket score. Note that we should see a cricket score line. But we all know that’s not how football works, football is the great leveller. The last David Vs Goliath that I can really remember Wolves taking part in was during that fateful season spent in the Premier League, Manchester United came to Molineux, (Wolves pretty much buried at this point) pretty much expecting to walk away with another three points. Hell, they even rested a few players for the end of season run in. We all know how that ended, one slip from a defender, a bit of dodgy goalkeeping and then resolute defending for the rest of the game resulted in three points for the boys in gold…or in those days…orange.
Let’s hope we don’t see a similar pattern come Saturday, Charlton managed a good point against Reading in mid week, this will have hopefully opened a few of the players eyes, as will the Ipswich game that these teams aren’t just going to turn up and roll over, they’ve still got something to fight for just as much as we’ve got something to aim for, there are no easy games. We simply must become more clinical, we’ve got to go out on Saturday, score and score again. We’ve got to take our chances. We were a cross bar away from three points on Tuesday, let’s hope that the margin of error isn’t as fine cut tomorrow.
Score predictions? I’m honestly hoping that we’ll have enough to see a confident win on Saturday, I may even be so bold as to predict an equalling of our 4 game clean sheet record, so a 2-0 for me, with an option for a third if we’re playing at the top of our game.
Right, I’ve also decided that I’m going to do another live match thread, details will follow in another post.
Until then, best of luck to the lads, let’s be hoping for three more points!
Tarra-a-bit!
