Wolves Vs Cardiff
By: Toby | October 31st, 2008
This is fixture a personal favourite of mine, for a good few reasons. Firstly, you’re almost always guaranteed goals as both teams aren’t short of striking power. With Cardiff’s McCormack having scored ten goals in the championship so far this season, which is looking pretty prolific. We can of course counter that with our boys Blake and Iwelumo who’ve scored a mighty nine each. Cardiff’s recent home form is one to look out for having won their last three, with Wolves’ away form currently lacking with two defeats from the last three games on their travels.
Secondly there’s the former manager to throw in, it’s like having to go and see your ex, you’d rather not do it, and you know something’s probably going to go wrong so you have to just put on a good face and be as good as you can be. I’m pretty sure Dave Jones loves playing us, he had good times and some rather patchy times. He’ll be up for a scrap, and he’ll inject that into his players. Whether he’ll be able to install that into Jay Bothroyd, one of the laziest and most unmotivated millionaires in football will be another question, followed quickly by whether or not he’ll even get a game.
Then you’ve got the angle of England verses Wales. The Welsh love to win things, probably because it happens so rarely, and they love nothing more for when they do win things for it to be against the English. It’s probably a bit of overspill from the envy they garnish from all the beautiful castles we’ve built in their country. (Which, on an aside they make a good amount of money from charging us to go and look around). My girlfriend’s Welsh, and she’s from Cardiff, so don’t call me a Xenophobe, I’m saying all of this with a fondness. I’m also trying to get her interested enough in this rivalry for us to go together to a bar to watch it….but I’m clutching at straws at this one.
Cardiff’s a great city, if you’ve got time go to Cardiff Bay which if you’ve not been before and are a fan of the second rate Dr Who knock off Torchwood you can see the Opera house is where the( camper than a row of pink tents) John Barrowman stands atop looking brooding and moody in the opening credits. There’s also a Nandos, the hallmark of quality dining. They’ve got good train links to boot. You could make a weekend of it?
Right then, aside from being a tourist information service, you should probably have some team news too. Firstly it looks like Ikeme is going to keep his place, in a Wolves side that I can’t see changing all that much sticking with an unchanged squad, with the exception of Stearman and Mancienne pushing for a place in the defence of course., no injury worries to really talk about apart from Jarvis, who is still on the way back to full fitness.
If I were pushed to decide a score I’d say 0-0, seeing as it’s on Sky, and they always choose the wrong matches, and we generally lose whenever we’re on it. But, what the hey, I’ll let my heart rule my head and say it’ll be close, with goals, but we’ll run out winners at 3-2 with Iwelumo with the first goal. Gowan, put a fiver on it.
So to all of you making the trip, good luck, and a word of advice, remember to bring the right change if you’re taking the Seven Bridge.
As I’ve got the future mother in law round this weekend till Sunday you might have to wait till the evening for the match analysis, or maybe Monday at a push. I’ll hopefully have some video too.
Tarra-a-bit.

Hi Toby, well done on taking over from Matt.
Looking forward to this, should be a classic.
We still haven’t forgiven SEB though!
If you’re looking for a more “rounded” view of the CCC etc, you’re welcome to stop by the podcast – http://argylepodcast.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/podcast-12.mp3
or indeed the Argyle corner of theoffside.
Anyhow, welcome.

Bothroyd will start and is in a good bit of form right now. As for being “unmotivated”, I’m sure if there’s only two games in the whole season he’d wanted to be motivated for it would the games against the team who sold him on? We’ll soon see, but especially with the game on TV, I have a feeling he might turn it on (not that he did in the televised game in the Cup at Swansea mind!)
As for this, “The Welsh love to win things, probably because it happens so rarely, and they love nothing more for when they do win things for it to be against the English” – woefully generalising and arrogant on so many levels. All I’ll be pleased with by ten past seven this evening is if Cardiff City has beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers. Rest assured, I won’t be viewing it as a celebrated victory for Wales.

Oh Martyn I was being playful, it’s the same sort of teasing I would give my girlfriend, asformentioned from Cardiff…Wales. She’s a girl, she takes it in better spirit than you.
And yes, it’s on sky, Wolves usually go missing.
And honestly, Jay was a lazy sod, there were many games last season where he literally did just walk around, I think he got taken off after half an hour in one game.
He’ll probably score today, one thing he has got is one hell of a long distance shot, he’s scored some absolute screamers!
