Wolves sign Andrew Surman – The return of the undisclosed fee.

By: Toby | July 1st, 2009

That’s probably due to Southampton having a fire sale in order to pay the electric bill this month rather than Wolves wanting to keep it under wraps. In signing Surman we’ve added another England U-21 to the squad which already boasts Stearman, Kightly and Ebanks Blake (who apparently is being tracked by England this season). Surman was a genuine high point to a Southampton side which was very much thrown in at the deep end from cut back after cut back.

Playing mostly in left midfield, and with an eye for goal, he can also play at left back, which is music to my ears…because if I’m honest that is one of the positions which is worrying me this season, if we can sign an out and out left back to cover big George, or to simply give competition for the position as, as good a job Ward did for us at times last season, I don’t think he’ll really cut it in that position in the Premiership.

Right then, two days into July, two signings! That’s a very decent ratio indeed.

Tarra-a-bit!

Loving the signings. Still want to see an extra central defender come in though, even if it’s just getting Mancienne back on loan.

I still can’t see us getting Mancienne. I know he enjoyed his time with us but surely bigger fish will be after him now. Mind you, I didn’t think we’d land Doyle so what do I know?

All in all, though, a thoroughly excellent week so far!

You never know with Mancienne, he knows the club, he knows the players, and this time we’re in the Premiership, going into the summer and the World Cup…he’ll be one of those players that if he’s playing week in week out, which I’d imagine he certainly would be with Wolves he might just sneak a place on the plane to South Africa.

    Hey Toby,

Great blog. I write the Football Perth blog (Perth Glory) and I am looking forward to watching the Wovles play the Glory in a little over a week’s time.

I hope you’re right about Mancienne, Toby. If you believe the hype, Capello’s world cup squad will be 50% Wolves!

If we did get Mancienne back, I sure hope he plays better than he did in Sweden over the last fortnight…

And now we’ve signed Halford, apparently. Anyone know much about him? A right back doesn’t seem like the most obvious need, although strength in depth is always good. Not that I’m complaining, mind: I’m just very pleased to see so many successful deals. Now, when we hear that Franck Ribery is moving to Wolves… :-)

A plague on your club – we wanted and could really have done with Surman!
