Wolves 3 – 2 Derby – A retrospect.

By: Toby | April 14th, 2009

Right now first a disclaimer, I’m in no way suggesting, on any real level that Wolves beating Derby in a Coca Cola Championship game is on the same level as America electing their first ever black president, but just for my sake, humour me and go with me on this one. Right, did you watch the presidential elections? I did, I thought it was fascinating, as is the scoring system. Essentially, the presidential election there is a race of sorts, certain states are worth more to win, and the first person to get to so many points wins, because it’s no longer really possible for them to get caught. I remember when Obama won a huge, massive state which pretty much meant he’d won the election, Obama fans celebrated, McCain fans were despondent, yet Obama didn’t come out to give his winning speech until it was secure…obviously having seen what happened to Al Gore who can blame him? It was through winning Ohio which put him on the brink of history, not yet official, yet so close it was tangible. Still with me? Good.

Derby was our Ohio. A game which if we were to have lost, which for great swathes of the game we looked likely to, the pressure, the grumbling and the inescapable negativity would have raised up and swallowed us all. Mumbles of 2002, the year we threw it away would lurk and look from the darkness…once again Wolves would have to wear the tag of big time bottlers round their necks for another week. But instead, we stepped up, we played the game (not as well as we could have) but be played the game, we scored goals and we won.

The sign of Champions is to come away with three points from games where you deserve nothing less than a slap across the face and a dunces’ cap. Keogh, the boo boy’s whipping boy for so long potentially cementing himself in the hearts of many a Wolves fan with his double salvo to snatch a win from the jaws of certain defeat. We returned from Derby with that ubiquitous statistic of being 7 points clear with 9 points to play for. By no means are we past the finish line, yet it is closer than it has ever been. We’ve faced our Ohio, and we’ve come past it with what we needed, another win.

So where does that leave us? Well, one win away from the Premiership with three games to do it with. Three draws would do it too. But do we really just want promotion? After possibly the finest season Wolves have put together in the second tier of English football? No I say, bring me the Championship. I want to be the Champions this time, I want to say that I support the team which won the league this season, I want to say I write about a brilliant team who’ve won the league. So that’s my cards on the table, you’ll have me celebrating, you’ll have my long and sprawling, gushing, emphatic celebratory post soon enough, but not until the final minutes have been played and we know where we stand. Hopefully that’ll be on a podium, lifting the league trophy.

    Great Speech my friend!!

Just to annoy everybody……………. I was in the states in July and my aunty campaigns for the Democrats (Obamas, Party) in the Michigan area that she lives in and as I spoke to her during this visit and by email over the months leading up to the November election it became obvious that Obama had a great chance, then, he was a shoe in, then he won Ohio etc and finally the Fat Lady sang!!

Since July however, I had been telling my Aunty that he was going to win, that everything pointed to the country wanting this change and that she should be talking about what he will need to do once he gets to the Promised Land not if he gets to it!

Sound familier………She hated me too, she new I ment well and ment what I said but it was so important to her she could not bring herself to actually say it so as not to tempt fait.

I will not tempt fait in the premier my friends and mathmatically the fat lady aint singing yet but……..

I told you we were up.

I still can’t remove the grin of my face. I know its still not mathematically possible just yet (toby) and if we lose the next two games and blues win theirs, we’ll all be having heart attacks on the last day (including Shirley, although she looks like she may have one very soon anyway). I really don’t want to think about the possibility of that happening but it would make the finial game a tantalizing thriller.
Enough of this barbaric nonsense, 2-1 to wolves on Saturday and defeats for Blues & Sheff making us deservedly Champions!
Come on me young n’ hungry… babbies

As an American, this post made me smile.

(Am I hearing whispers of “Yes, we can!”?)

Great article Toby! I don’t want to admit it yet that we are going up. sorry Mike! It has to be mathematically certain. Although in my bones, I know it’s 99% that we’ve done it.

I’ll be chanting “Shirley Shirley, Shirley”. And no Mike, unfortunately I don’t have her number.

Loving that Keogh picture, it’s like the Craddock picture from last week. It shows you what it means to him, he’s utterly pumped in that picture, it’s like some sort of redemption for the lad, and who would be suprised with some of the idiotic critism he’s had leveled at him over this season and last?!

Two thoughts about this post. First, I’m completely with Toby about being greedy at this point. Had you asked me at the start of the season I honestly don’t think I would have seen any difference between 1st and 2nd, but when that gap dropped to two points after the Birmingham game, I began to feel that it would be a real disappointment to drop to second after topping the league for almost the entire season.

Second, the election-night analogy (with disclaimer!) is spot-on. My wife’s American, and I remember passing her a note (she was on the phone) that said “He’s won Ohio”, and really knowing it was over at that moment. One consequence of that, by the way, was that there wasn’t really any single definable moment of elation — by the time Obama won for sure (when the California result came), we already really knew he was the winner. That could happen to us here as well — particularly if, say, we and B’ham both win on Saturday, so we get promotion but not yet the Championship.

Well I for one can’t wait for Saturday, until then it’ll just be more wild dreaming. I think we’ll probably draw or lose, because as long as I can remember whenever a team is about to go up and they send the cameras to a stadium they slip up only to do it the week after when the press is somewhere else!!

i’ve already been getting jibes from people supporting both premier league and championship clubs saying ‘well you’ll just come straight back down again’. why does no one say, congratulations on getting promoted, good luck next year. grrrr
anyway, its a nice feeling to have achieved promotion but i too am greedy and want the top spot, we’ve held the top for so long they should have engraved our name in the trophy back in november!
btw are there any more wolves games on sky before the end of the season!?

Yeah thats all I get…’you’ll be coming straight back down’. But if we take a moment to think…Morgan has promised to plough money (im sure i read it somewhere) into the club to keep them there…as that is where the moolah is. So if we buy say 4 quality players then we’re sorted to at least challenge the teams. Then we look at who’s staying up. Hull City and Stoke theres a possible 6 points there, maybe even 12, then look at who’ll be coming up with us. Its too early to say yet but if we bring sheffield utd and cardiff theres another possible 12 points. Then we look mid table, west ham, bolton, Fulham, we can get a few points from these. I think next season is the season that we could cement ourselves in the top flight. Am I just dreaming?

why the hell shouldn’t we dream. thats the delight at being promoted automatically. it will be hard and we will get whipped occasionally but i can’t see any reason if we buy a few premier leahue standard players that we won’t have the experience and energy to do whats needed!

I never understand how people can write off a team in the prem until they’ve actually signed anyone, or even seen them play. Look at people putting Hull at the bottom of their premier league table in July, they’ve been brilliant. It’s be naive to think that the squad we have now will be the squad that’ll be competing in August.

Yes we will, yes we have, yes we are. American spin, I just look at the table and see its hardly possible even mathematically to throw it away now. I don’t have to listen to anybody saying we will come straight back down. That only applies if we don’t strengthen the squad in the summer and after last time I think we will do things differently. Players are gonna be queuing up to join us….

I’m still knackered from the weekends victories and drinking exploits, so it’s a long overdue early night for me.

As for Saturday, anything is possible with Wolves, but this time…

Just plain jealousy and sour grapes from other clubs.

Yes Premiership will be unforgiving but with sound investment and the blooding of some of our younger talented players (Zeli, etc) I think we can survive and go on to prosper. First season is always hard but the gap can and has been bridged. Look for talent in Championship – Zeng Zhi when fit is Premiership quality for instance.
