“Mac snubs Wolves for Wigan” – Disheartening Headline of the day.
By: Toby | July 17th, 2009
Very disheartening. It all comes from his link. From the Bastian of truth and honest journalism, The Sun. Wolves had a substantial bid accepted for young Scottish player of the year James McCarthy only for the move to be hijacked by Wigan, who now seem to be in the driving seat and are apparently seen as the “best option for the development of a player”. Oh that’s alright then, he’s doing it for football reasons.
Oh wait.
That’s a big old pile of rubbish. So James McCarthy, on the off chance that you google Wolves on your i-phone on the way down to Wigan, here are the reasons why you shouldn’t join them, and come and join us.
1 – Don’t expect to be adored. They don’t like football there. Welcome to the worst supported side in the Premier League, they like one game up there lad, and it isn’t football, if you were a strapping hooker (oo er missus) they’d love you, as it is, it’s a rugby town and Wigan have one of the lowest attendances in the league, averaging at 18,000 a game. Wolves averaged just over 24,000 thousand in the league below Wigan’s we don’t care much for egg ball, we’re a one sport town.
2 – Try playing football on a Rugby pitch. That’s right, every year Gary Lineker and Alan Hanson tut and frown over Wigan’s pitch, which by October resembles the grass in front of the main stage of Glastonberry. Well, there’s always away games eh? Wolves have, and have had for many years one of the finest pitches outside of the Premier League, now we’re back where we belong we’ve got a first class pitch for first class football, if you do chose Wigan son, you’ll see what you’re missing when you get here….that’s if you get a game because….
3 – This move is apparently the “best option for the development of a player” where does that logic come from then? I can’t even think of one player that’s come through the ranks at Wigan from a young age to make something of himself. Also, Wigan have bought all their talent over the years, not nurtured it, all of their current players arrived fully formed and ready to go, I’m not sure they’ve ever had to craft any one. Whereas if you were to sneak a peak at the fruits of our academy you’d see the likes of established Premiership names such as Lescott, Keane and Andrews who have been equipped with the skills for the Premier League by a side that at the time of their tenure with the club, were firmly rooted in the old Division One.
So there you go son, don’t listen to your agent who’s being defended by the pound signs ringing in his ears (Fan’s favourite Willy McKay agent to Premiership role models Joey Barton, Pascal Chimbonda and Henri Camera) come to a club that’s well supported, and where you have the chance to become ahero.
I’d say it’s a simple choice to be honest.
I’m pretty sure when every Wolves fan found out we were in for James, they were very excited, hopefully the lad will chose football over money, but I don’t think it’s going to happen!
Ah well,
Tarra-a-bit.

Promising an 18 year old a guarenteed first team place is a dangerous thing to do, and with Willy McKay…he’ll be jumping ship some time soon…like most of Wigan’s good players then really?

yep, but thats how wigan attract the good players to keep them in the prem to start off with.
If he plays well for two seasons then they sell him for 10 mill they will consider it job done.
Of course some might say it lacks ambition, but until their town takes notice of them, wigan have little choice.
still think he made the wrong choice. He wasnt offered guaranteed first team football anywhere else for a reason…

Ahh well what can you do. It would have been a good addition but I don’t think he was essential to our survival anyway so on to the next target!

Yeah he was more of a long term prospect, I don’t think he wanted to be considered as such. And there’s always the danger that we’d spend all our energy crafting the lad only for him (Or his agent) to decide he needed a “new challenge” (more money).

Toby I am surprised to see you haven’t made an article on what the academy achieved in Sweden, why not?

Money is the only reason he chose Wigan, right?
So it couldn’t have anything to do with:
- Working with one of the most exciting young managers in England?
- Working with his former coach Graham Jones?
- Playing for an established premiership team? The arrogance of some Wolves fans is almost beyond belief. What do you really expect the lad to say? “Wow, Keith Andrews came through the ranks here? And you guys won the championship in 1959? Where do I sign?”
Even if he did go there for the money, what’s wrong with that? He went to play for the people who valued him the highest. It’s not that strange.

I’m guessing you don’t know Keane and Lescott also came through the ranks of Wolves, plus Hennessey, Ismail, Mendes-Laing and Spray who all seem promising.

Sorry I didn’t mean to be snippy, you got me at the end of my shift, which wasn’t the nicest few hours ever. The Gothia Cup win is great news, by the sounds of it Zele did well along with Laing and Spray producing some good form in the tournament, also looks like we’ve got another keeper lined up as in the penalty shootout our lad saved 4 pens I think?

Is that the same keeper who’s starting against Port Vale tonight?

It may well have been, Spray had a good 60 minutes so I’m told.

Just seen a pic of the young keeper – he makes Hennessey look like he’s on the brink of retirement! Good stuff though, nice to see some academy stuff going on

sorry – another E&S rant. Not only did Nash use ‘Gatecrash’ for the 4 millionth time earlier in the week, but someone has now written this:
“Wolves winger Michael Kightly’s busy comeback climaxed an evening of positives on a night when the first pre-season defeat in over 12 months was the only negative.” The first pre-season defeat in 12 months?! Well it would have been hard to get one in between wouldn’t it?Posted from

haw
those guys.
They’re getting paid, that’s the thing.

I dunno maybe he meant first friendly defeat in 12 months. Dont forget we regualrly had those ridiculous closed friendly matches against clubs during the season as our way of reducing scouting costs!

Ha ha. They love their gatecrashing at the E&S.
The paper is a joke…and yet I buy a copy EVERY matchday without fail.

How about a new blog entry. Maybe some predictions about how the season will start. Where the team will end up in the table.
Who will be able to hack it in the Premiership? Who will be in over their heads?Posted from
