Cardiff Here We Come

By: Daryl | February 15th, 2008

Jones with Hayward in happier daysNot so long ago, an FA Cup trip to Cardiff meant you’d made the final and you’d be playing at the Millenium Stadium. But now they’ve finally finished Wembley a trip to Cardiff means Cardiff City and Ninian Park in the Fifth Round. More importantly, it means facing former manager Dave Jones (pictured with Sir Jack in happier times) again.

Of all the managers who’ve promised to take Wolves to the Premier League, Jones was the only one to actually do it. Sure we finished bottom but we didn’t exactly disgrace ourselves. We were above the relegation zone on more than one occasion and when we did eventually drop back down to the Championship we had a 1-0 win over Manchester United (Kenny Miller, get in!) to take with us as a souvenir.

Dave Jones should have been given time to regroup and rebuild, but a so-so start to the first season back in the Championship saw him gone by November. Given what happened next with Glenn Hoddle (ie nothing) and now the way things are going with Mick McCarthy (he’s started re-signing half of his rubbish Sunderland team) I’m sure many at Wolves regret firing Jones so hastily. Let’s hope we don’t have to regret it all over again tomorrow.
