Wolves 3 – 3 Norwich (& Keith Woolmer) Oh…and my 100th Post! Hurrah!
By: Toby | February 3rd, 2009
Well that’s how I see it anyway, he was utterly shocking from start to finish tonight, his game was riddled with more errors than our defence, and that’s saying something. To put it quite simply Keith Woolmer was utterly abysmal tonight, he might as well have not bothered turning up, I don’t know why we bothered clearing the pitch.
This game if nothing else highlighted exactly why we’ve spent 2.5 million on a defender, because at times we were utterly terrible at the back, school boy errors, misplaced back passes, lack of communication and all round general buffoonery on such a level that at times last night we were rendered utterly embarrassing to watch, we didn’t look like the team at the top of the league. With performances like that at the back, we won’t be for much longer. I think I speak for the Wolves fans collective when I say bring on the Berra, I hope and pray he’s the answer to the gaping holes in our defence, much like Mancienne was. Oh for the chance of getting him back on loan for the rest of the season…we can but hope.
It’s a shame really that the defence aspired to such ham-fistery because this game could have easily have been a sweeping eulogy to the one man goal machine Sylvan Ebanks Blake who notched up his 18th, 19th and 20th goals tonight, in a classic poachers evening. Wolves finally have a striker who you can expect twenty upwards a season from, and were it not for him tonight we’d be looking down the barrel of the result which would surely be almost too much to stomach. To be honest, only taking one point from six against Norwich this season is hard enough to take, but I’m not sure I’d have been able to handle coming home empty handed twice.
I don’t usually question Mick when it comes to decisions, and this is only a small question, rather than a full on gripe, but with 5 minutes to go, slinging on Big Chris (which I’m all for) and taking off Jarvis seems utterly mad. If anyone’s going to supply Iwelumo with the chances to score, it’s going to be Jarvis! I was left scratching my head over that one, that is, if I had a spare five from fuming over the referee, who at times didn’t even want Wolves to have corners or throw ins, even when they were obvious, the boys having to rely on assistant referees to overrule the plonker in the black, Respect Campaign? How many times have we had duff refs this season? Too many. If I acted that much of a tool in my job they’d have me out of there faster than I can change a keg, and I can change a keg faster than Bruce Lee.
So here we are, match facts for those of you itching for that kind of thing, Wolves lined up with a side unchanged from Saturday, aside from Jarvis coming in for Reid.
————-Hennessey
Foley—Stearman—Craddock—Ward
Kightly—Henry– David Jones–Jarvis
——-Ebanks-Blake—- Keogh
Wolves took the lead on the 25th minute, after looking, to be honest, second best for the opening stages, with Ebanks slotting in after good work from Kightly and Jarvis. Unfortunately, and not for the first time, we managed to kick off and concede pretty much straight away. Norwich looked from then on the more likely to score again, Wolves pretty much just about managing to hang on till half time. Things weren’t helped by the loss of Kightly on the 39th minute. He seemed to fall on his shoulder awkwardly (I’ve heard rumours of a dislocation). This had a two stroke effect, in removing our talisman Wolves were lopsided and demoralised, let’s hope he’s not out for too long.
I don’t know what Mick said to them at half time but it certainly didn’t work as Wolves managed two minutes before Carl Cort managed to do something useful at the Molineux for the first time in his career and score, it’s just a shame he could never turn it on like that with us. Norwich fans shouldn’t get too excited, he’ll be out of the rest of the season soon enough. So there we are, behind by a goal, what happened next was nothing short of inspiring.
Within the space of three minutes Ebanks Blake dragged Wolves level, and then ahead. The man is simply a brilliant striker. Both goals poachers efforts, inside the box, another assist for Jarvis on the second and Wolves were back in control…for NINE minutes. For the love of God, if Mick does nothing in training this week it should be to slap each and every one of the players around the face when they go ahead because by crikey these lads need to wake up when they take the lead. I’ve lost count the amount of times we’ve taken the lead only to be pegged back. The game was an utter hum-dinger for shots, just look at the gamecast, it’s off the chart with what we usually see in a game!
And so that’s how it finished, 3-3. Still enough time for our Keith to bottle a blatant second yellow for Croft and a hand ball, but let’s not split hairs eh? A brilliant game for the neutral then? I dare say a brilliant game for a Norwich supporter. I’ve got no idea how they found themselves in 20th prior to this game, they’re one of the most attacking sides we’ve seen down the Molineux all season.
Oh, this is my 100th post since starting this blog in October for those of you who are counting, hello to those of you who’ve read from the start, hello to those of you who are new! Thank you for reading the words that I put up on here and thank you for the feedback! I love writing this blog, even when we churn out performances like tonight and I love hearing from you in the comment box!
So, let’s move on. We’re a game ahead of the rest of the top four and find ourselves five points clear of Reading and seven clear of Birmingham. Which isn’t the end of the World, because if we’ve learnt anything this season, it’s than anyone can beat anyone!
So here’s to Saturday! And another 100 posts!
Highlights up when they drop!
Tarra-a-bit!

Congratulations on 100 posts Toby. I enjoy reading them as much as you do writing them so keep it up.
Also big congrats to Ebanks-Blake scoring (according to SSN) his first senior level hat trick. Fingers crossed Berra plugs the gap in defense.
I don’t know if you’ve seen Toby, but if Cardiff were to win their games in hand, and beat us soon, they’d be amongst the top teams too which isn’t a nice thought. What do you think about that?

Yeah congrats on the 100th post Toby, churning them out. I do check back every day though, the level headed writing keeps me sane after going on 606.
Full credit to SEB, could i go as far to say that he has been the most consistant player for wolves this season, i think i can. ok foley and ward have had their moments but they are part of the defensive unit and atm, they are not performing. such a shame when you score 3 goals at home because that should get us a win. we have drifted between brilliance and sloppiness, starting at around the centre circle.
glad we have berra to shake things up a bit and no doubt MM will play him in the next game. on the other hand though how much pressure is on him from MM and the fans to tighten things up, he has a difficult time ahead.
Top of the league is brilliant of course, but with a squad with the best potential we’ve seen for years and sitting pretty at the top, we need to prove our worth. Still have full confidence in them but ‘clenched’ doesn’t go close!

Yeah it’s tight, very very tight, every week it gets tighter.
Jim, yes, Cardiff are creeping up, a lot does depend on them keeping up their level of performance, they’ve having a good run indeed, unbeaten in a long time and winning by the odd goal, I’m not sure if this is a new dawning in the Championship or just your standard good run. Reading had one of those and were still unable to break the top two for a long while, I could see them worrying Birmingham in the near future, us and Reading? It might take time, and it really does depend on them winning. They’ll have a chance with one man penalty winning machine Chopra back in the squad for sure.
Deep down I hope it doesn’t happen, my partner is from Cardiff, I’d never hear the end off her and her mates back home if they did an Albion on us. I tend to push that to the back of my mind!

Nice one Toby! Wow, that seemed to go really quickly – good work.
I’d just like to say I was on the E&S site earlier, looking at the message board. No wonder we’re pretty much hated most fans around the country. The arrogance of some fans is unbelievable and the booing business sickening. We finally, after nigh on a decade, have a group of players who fight for the cause, and this is what happens.
It’s simply bewildering, and takes the varnish off the privelige of supporting such an iconic club.
Good to have a level headed chap at the helm of this blog though!

Congrats Toby on reaching 100 posts – I enjoy reading your updates.
I didn’t listen to the game last night but have to say I was pretty disappointed with the result. Norwich shouldn’t have posed such a issue but when you look at our goals conceded (40) and problem we have becomes glaringly obvious. Being 15th in the league in terms of defence isn’t a good place to be: http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/D1/glsagst.html
I know we score loads but the last 8 games has proven we need to plug a very leakly backline.
It’s great we are where we are after only winning 2 out of the last 8 but I think the next 8 will need to be a lot better.
Having seen Berra play here in Scotland a few times for Hearts I think he’ll do well but there needs to be far more co-ordination at the back.
Looking even further ahead – has anyone noticed that Reading and Birmingham are playing each other on the last day of the season…..I wonder if that will be a game that will affect who out of Wolves, Reading and Brum go up…I’ve a feeling it might!!

Cheers lads, I agree dboy, the level of some of our fans sometimes is ridiculous, you wonder if they’re watching the same team, especially when they start spouting some of the crap that I’ve read and heard.
Chris, that defence stat is shocking, let’s hope Berra is the answer to that problem.
And yes, I spied the last games of the season, we’ve got Donny…their game could be an utter epic at that point, here’s hoping to having our own destiny in our own hands by that point!!

Nice work, Toby. Congratulations on your century. This is about the only site I can dare to visit these days. The other well-known ones (see the nice compliment there?) seem to have be taken over by complete freaks. OK, at the moment we’re a bit ropey but in the last 20 years, has there been a better time to be a Wolves fan? Top of the league since I don’t know when!
I’m not from Wolverhampton so please tell me, does the water taste a bit funny up there? (I don’t generally drink water when I go up for a game.) What is the cause of this collective madness?
Anyway, keep up the good work – you’re providing a valuable service.

Good to know that if we beat Doncaster we will be 2 points better off that Brum and Reading if they draw, or 3 points better off than 1 of them. IF we beat Donny. Like you say, hope it doesn’t come down to that…

if wolverhamptons hard water was the cause of this nonsense then id personally go round giving everyone water filters, alas i feel it is more complicated than that.

Well, we seem to be doing OK despite the insanity of some of the support. Those around us will all be dropping points along the way so the occasional draw isn’t the end of the world. This season just feels different somehow – perhaps that’s the cause of some of the fans strange attitude, a disbelief that we could actually achieve something in style.

trust me i dont get it either, we’d all like a smooth run and have it settled by mid feb but it just doesn’t happen like that.
btw toby, highlights ahoy!

ah cheers sam, I’ll whack them up for everyone else in a second.
As for the water, it’s alright, I’m in Birmingham now which is apparently some of the best drinking tap water around…you wouldn’t think it with some of the people I share buses with on a weekday.

Hey Man,
Just stumbled across your post, Great work and congrats on the 100th effort.
Does nobody at the Golden Palace agree with me that we are already up?
The season will carry on with highs n lows and we will end up 1st or 2nd about 4 points clear of 3rd. We will all win some and loose some.
Can we defend? No! but lets see what Berra does.
To worry about how we would perform in the Prem, like I am hearing and reading on various sites is crazy, look at Hull, Stoke and the Tesco’s all are in there fighting, nobody is miles off the pace.
Even if we had never conceeded a goal all season that is us next season so stop worrying, get behind the boys and Mick and lets all stick together for the final push.Posted from

You are a man of extreme confidence, I’m a little more reserved…every week as it comes that kind of thing. (Deep down in my heart we’ll be playing champions league football in 5 years tme, like in my football managed 09)
