Wolves 1 – 1 Sheffield United

By: Toby | December 26th, 2008

Well I hope everyone got what they wanted this Christmas, I know I did, and some extra, it was a good harvest all in all, so as I sit back and type up the action of the game today while listening to Nashville Skyline, 1969 Canadian import vinyl (I love my girlfriend very, very much), excuse me if I’m slightly relaxed to the fact that we’ve just dropped two points at home, I am, as always, going to try and look to the bright side of today.

Right, first of all, that’s Sheffield United out of the way, in December, I for one wouldn’t want to be playing them towards the end of the season when teams start needing to win (I’m aware the aim of the game is to win throughout the season, but come March they’re either going to be pushing for Automatics or consolidating play-offs, much like ourselves). Birmingham have them at the start of March for the example, Reading get them mid April, while we get to sit pretty, safe in the knowledge that we garnered 4 points out of 6 in our games against them, scoring 4, conceding twice. I certainly think any rational Wolves fan would have taken that before the games.

The game itself was one we could have easily lost or indeed snatched a win from, a draw was probably fair on both sides when the final whistle blew. Wolves were thrust into the lead thanks to the one man on a mission that was Neil Collins, again connecting with a Kightly ball to score his second in two games, if you do the maths that makes for a prolific 2 in 2. If he carries this on, we’ll have to consider moving him into Ebanks Blake’s slot, who looked jaded again, obviously too many mince pies for SEB. It was perennial “He’s still playing in the Championship??” nearly man James Beattie who restored parity before half time. As you can see from the little shot plotter above, they slightly shaded it in terms of chances, but not by a whole lot, we gave as good as we got.

Plus, elsewhere, our 7 point lead ahead of second remains undiminished, as it turns out Wolves’ Christmas present got lost in the post and ended up in Cardiff as they managed a draw against the team currently snapping at our heels (and they would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for that pesky Federici scoring in what felt like the 13th minute of injury time). Birmingham also won, but it was another 1-0, and it was a penalty, against Ipswich, so I wouldn’t get too angsty over that one.

So, don’t let that spoil your Christmas, think of it a point gained rather than 2 lost, and look forward to a trip to managerless Blackpool on Monday with a Kightlyless Wolves (Shall be interesting).

And to those select few who are currently bemoaning our recent form, which has let me remind you consisted of 10 wins, 2 draws and one loss in the last 13 matches. In which we’ve amassed 32 points, been top the entire time and have scored 24 goals. That’s 24 goals in 13 games, 32 points in 13 games, heaven FORFEND we don’t win every game.

Cheer up eh?!

I’ll get you some video when I can find some, but until then, get to work on the rest of those Quality Street.

Tarra-a-bit.

Nice one Toby… However, have to say I think you’re going very easy on us. We were well out of sorts yesterday and the reason we got anything was due to Wayne Hennessey’s performance.

Stearman, Foley, Henry at times, and Jarvis were the only players who were getting anwhere near to the ball against a team that looked more likely to score for the full ninety minutes. Iwelumo seemed to be nullified by Ehiougu, and Kites also seemed to be lacking the impetus we know him for.

Also – the chart suggests that Sheffield had 50% more shots than us which is testament to their dominance.

Felt slightly sorry for Wardy who couldn’t deal with Dyer – Mancienne seemed to keep him quiet though in the second half when he came on.

Good to get a result on an off day though. Next!

They’re all valid points, but while Sheffield did have more shots, we’re the team that managed to make a little flower pattern in their box. They say a picture says a thousand words.

Yeah, not all that in depth I’m afraid, essay deadlines looming, christmas and new years mean I’m operating at half power, expect full service after the 5th of january, when my essays are due in! haha
