Wolves 0 – 1 Reading – Bugger.
By: Toby | January 27th, 2009
I was so excited about this game, I had been waiting since the debacle of the FA Cup rolled past, really, I’ve been waiting for this game since our last meeting. And what was I rewarded by? An own goal, not only an own goal but an own goal in the first minute. What a way to piss on my proverbial chips that was. It didn’t help that it was Collins who netted past a bemused Hennessey, who’d hardly had time to the do the ubiquitous goalkeeping ritual of kicking each post in a very serious way indeed. “None the less!” I thought, they surely can’t keep up that ratio, 90-0 plus injury time goals would have been quite dreadful, and while Wolves did firm up significantly after that goal, we didn’t do much to challenge Reading’s goal in the first half, needless to say I was disappointed, my wonderful evening of meticulously planned football was being cast asunder before my very eyes.
On a side note, Wolves lined up a little bit like this –
————-Hennessey—————–
Foley—Collins—Stearman—Ward
Kightly—Quashie—Henry—-Jarvis
——–Keogh—-Ebanks-Blake——
So Quashie got his debut, which was relatively solid to begin with, nothing spectacular, yet he’s not a spectacular player, a few long range pops, which pretty much summed up most of our chances in the first half and the early stages of the second. The second half started with Wolves looking far more sprightly, Reading seemingly happy to let Wolves come and attack them, which Wolves seemed to be slightly reluctant to do, much to the fan’s fury at times. Wolves were looking quite flat, dangerous at times yet lacking that killer last ball, the game was tight, tighter than we’ve seen in a lot of games this season. To be fair to both Reading and Wolves, it was clear why these two teams were occupying the top two places of the Championships, you don’t get to where we both are by having shot shy strikers, or calamitous defenders….though I do wonder at times I’ll be honest.
Iwelumo made his bow on the 60th minute, Keogh making way for the big man, Keogh yet again running tirelessly, yet not able to turn that industry to goals, I love the guy, if he had goals he’d have a very complete package, there are strikers who score more than Andy does who don’t try half as much, it’s very frustrating. Iwelumo almost made an instant impact, only his inability to hold his line against the Reading defence the only reason he didn’t get his name on the score sheet.
So there it was, we lost, again. Compiled with the fact that Birmingham won….and er…Reading did too, that means our lead is looking extremely shaky. Which is worrying.
Collins’ didn’t have the best day at the office it must be said…an own goal and a Red Card is pretty much the worst day a defender can have I suppose? If he had a dunces cap, he’d be wearing that on the coach home for me tonight.
All this means that the game at Molineux on Saturday against Watford becomes a must win, and I don’t usually say that. It’s a must win. We’re still 4 points clear of third? For the optimists amongst us, that’s something to hold onto, but I’ll be honest, as every week passes, there are less and less things to be confident about going into games. Let’s hope we can get someone in before the end of the transfer window, give us that shot in the arm I think we’re beginning to desperately need.
Highlights up tomorrow!

went to the game today and i feel my quashie point was vindicated, he was no-where near fit and looked 10yards behid the pace for most of the game.
Collins was an absolute clown, dont get me wrong, hes a great guy and tries his heart out and i have defended him in numerous discssions with my dad and friends but he is nowhere near good enough and to be honest i was relieved when he got sent off.
On a side note ebanks-blake played really well today, battled, held the ball up, found a man everytime and was a real nuisence.
It was a pretty drab game to be fair and reading didnt really look any better than us and if you take out collins it was a classic 0-0, but i suppose thats what hurts most they werent up to much and took the points.
you may notice by the lacxk of structure in this that i am still very disapponted from the game (and the massive journey out of town to the ground which means ive only just got back despite living in central reading) and ill probably retract all or most of these statements once ivecalmed down.
in hindsight we are still top by two points, but i feel this could be hard to come back from, today we looked no where near champions…

Well if you look at it this way, really, we’ve only got to play Cardiff and Birmingham who should really present that much of a stiff challenge, whereas Birmingham and Reading have got to play eath other, and the likes of Sheff United etc.
I’m sure after something like three wins and we’ll be right back on track!

Watford is a must win game because I have spent a lot of money on getting a Executive Box in the Steve Bull stand for my 21st and it’d be nice for them to win for me! From what Sky Sports News said, it was a pretty good game. And I’m sure that John Salako who was watching the game for them said Phil Collins got sent off

That’s amazing, we should sign Phil up for cover for the next few games like?
Once he gets into the rhythm of things I’d sure he’d be fine.

at least Phil C would be good in the air for evening matches, being able to feel it coming and all.
Other than that – bollocks! A game ruined after 62 seconds!

Yeah, if there’s one thing we didn’t want is to concede in the first 5, we’ve done that so many times this season, we seem to either score early or conceed early!
Very annoying.
Like I say, totally ruined my night.

how come we always seem to have a shakey start. not very often are we out of the blocks faster than our opponents. If we want to finish this season well we need to dominate more.
love the wolves, always will but its so fustrating at times when you see the potential and little mistakes let us down!Posted from

And it’s odd that Mick, a gritty no-nonsense defender himself, has produced a team with bags of flair but prone to big defensive lapses. He’s the anti-George Graham.
The goals seem to have dried up as well which is perhaps a bit more worrying. Everyone said that once Jarvis and Kightly were back playing together on the wings that SEB and Chris would be banging them in for fun but that hasn’t happened.

it’s as though their confidence has gone. we need fabio capello.

we’ve had tough games though to be fair, if you look at the games coming up there’s the possiblity to get a little run going, which is what we did last time we had a wobble, another 7 game winning streak wouldn’t go amiss right now I’ll be honest.

some factual errors in this to cheer you up

I’ve had a little bit of a play…the title is genius from the off, to “move on up” in Birmingham is obviously to “stay third”

And on the bright side losing Collins for a few games may be a blessing in a not-very-convincing disguise. I admire the guy enormously but it might mean we are forced to buy/use someone better. And let’s face, thousands of bigoted morons on loads of web forums can’t all be wrong, can they?

I’ve heard they’re usually the ones with the inside track, anyone who’ll use the phrase “for that money I’ll drive him myself” is usually onto a loser, unless the player is a little shit. Davies? Hah, I jest.
Well yes we play Watford on the 31st, which would usually be the last day of the transfer window, but what with it closing on a sunday, it’s been moved to midnight on the 1st of February I believe?

Amazing – it makes no difference how often I go on to the official website – we still haven’t signed anyone!

It’d be nice to be linked with someone, all we seem to do is get loans and get offers we make turned down.
It’s like football manager.

You would have thought we’d be quite an attractive proposition. Possible, even probable, promotion to the PL, no doubt decent salary hikes all round if we go up, the rare opportunity to play in orange… Sorry, I know it’s supposed to be Old Gold but I don’t think it’s been that for quite a few strips now.
Still, a few days left to go in the window…and a watched pot never boils so I’ll stop checking the website for a few minutes.

We do like our last minute deals too, I just hope I wake up on the morning of the transfer window shutting to read “mancienne returns to Wolves” oooo that’d be sweet. And while we’re dreaming I’ll go for Keane to make an emotional return to his home club for the remainder of the season….

If we all wish really really hard…
How about this: Keane sees out the rest of the season at L’pool, getting more and more disgruntled as he sees his career ebbing away. Wolves get promoted and Keane grabs the chance to return to a hero’s welcome. He’s then groomed, so to speak, by Mick to become the next Wolves manager in five years time, leading us to a glorious orange – sorry, golden future!

Let’s have Lescott back while we’re at it.
I bought him back on Football Manager, the fans loved it…and they better had, seeing as they’d simingly instantaniously forgotten that I’d won the FA Cup the previous season by being “dissapointed” in a 1-0 loss against Liverpool, raising questions about my selections and all sorts.
Fickle bastards.

I managed a record 3 hours away from the official site and still no signing! Just bland statements of reassurance from a short bald man and a taller man with some hair. Do these people not realise the world is coming to an end? That automatic relegation to the Blue Square Premier is now a virtual certainty? Quashie may look like a Buddhist monk with his shiny head and his orange attire but now is not the time for a zen-like calm – we need panic buys, sackings and the public be-heading of a central defender!
