Wolves in a Nutshell
By: Daryl | January 2nd, 2008
Hi there, I’m Daryl. I’ve been merrily blogging away here on The Offside (and over at World Cup Blog) for what feels like forever now, and they’ve finally rewarded my loyalty with a Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. blog, so I can vent about my first, foremost and most frustrating footballing love.
If you’ve never heard of Wolves then don’t worry, that just means you’re young. But it is a team with a great history, if a slightly suspect present.
In a nutshell Wolves used to be brilliant and feared around the world (’50s) then not so much (’60s) then we were OK again for a while (’70s) but then God-awful and relegated all the way to Division Four (early ’80s.)
Then Steve Bull and his goals came along and Wolves climbed back up to Division Two (late ’80s) but wasted a fortune in an unsuccessful attempt to get into the Premiership (’90s.)
We finally reached the promised land via the playoffs in 2002/3, but found out the promised land was a harsh place and finished bottom of the Premier League in 2003/4. The money ran out last season and Mick McCarthy surprised us all by fielding a lot of youngsters and making the playoffs (where we lost to West Brom, boo) but then Steve Morgan took over with a promise to spend some money, which we did and now we’re apparently rubbish again.
It’s now seven games without a win for Wolves and just two goals in the last five games. Unsurprisingly we’ve sunk out of the playoff positions and down to 10th place. Here’s hoping that an Offside blog will bring Wolves some luck in 2008, or failing that maybe the January transfer window will bring us a striker who can actually score.

Thanks Matt. At least Wolves are still in the top four of The Offside Championship!

No love like a first love.
(P.S. How does your wife feel about you taking on yet another blog? My personal opinion is that real life is overrated.)

Wolves are a great historical team, and as we talked about once, they are a young squad now that is hopefully building for the future. Wolves hold a special place in my heart as one of six UEFA Cup fans worldwide, since they were finalists in the first-ever UEFA Cup back in 1971. Good luck to Wolves and with the blog.

Thanks Ian. Glad Wolves have a place in at least one neutral’s heart. For some reason they tend to be inexplicably unpopular with non-fans. And as for the UEFA Cup, if I hear any more Premiership fans complaining about the competition, I’ll gladly trade places with them and enter Wolves next season.
Laurie, if I see her I’ll ask (just kidding.)
