Why have Wolves gone….a bit….wonky?
By: Toby | January 19th, 2009
Well, what in flippinâ crikey has gone wrong at Wolves then? Thatâs the question on a lot of peopleâs lips right now, Iâm going to go through it all a bit, have a little shuffle around, poke a few places and hopefully come up with an answer, itâs like a classic exercise in the essay, essay being taken from the French, âessayerâ â to try out (Thatâs a fact for you, impress the girl you next take to KFC). So letâs try out this one, itâs going to be a hard question to crack I think, it seems hard to track down what exactly has gone wrong this month, but the fact remains that by tomorrow, itâll have been a calendar month since weâve won a game in the league. And thatâs worrying.
Right first off this isnât an article of doom and gloom, Iâm not going to harp on about individuals and point fingers, stamping up and down in circles shouting âwhar I fink is thisâ and âwhar you fink is wrongâ no, thatâs not my style, and if anything Iâd like you to chip in on the comments with what you think has gone… well…not wrong… but…wonky.
The first area which has been bought up a lot pre match in recent games, is our defence. Itâd be naive to say that we havenât missed Mancienne since his recall, thatâs an absolute understatement. He came in last time we had a wobble (loses against Norwich, Reading and Swansea had us pushing the panic button) and turned into a cure all, he slotted into our defence, plugged the gaps and turned us into a water tight outfit, we didnât look like we were going to concede anymore, and if we did, it usually took something decent. But thatâs the thing, before Mancienne was when we as a team were playing our most adventurous football, scoring three or four at a stride, once the little genius wedged himself into our back line, we didnât really need to anymore, we could get one goal, maybe two, safe in the knowledge we werenât going to concede that many in reply. Now with Mancienne back sitting on the bench for Chelsea (donât get me started on my rage towards that predicament, why the hell recall a player to sit looking sullen in a tracksuit WHY?!) weâre still as cautious, not punchy up front.
Sticking with the back end of the team, Wolves have had a pretty unique position this season in so much as that we donât have a regular number one, Hennessey and Ikeme seem almost interchangeable at times, once one picks up an injury or a drop in form the other comes in their place in a readymade and primed condition. Brilliant. Or is it? Defenders need a consistent voice behind them, Keepers have different techniques, while Henners might call one way, Ikeme might another, weâve seen a few times each keeper come for a ball and hesitate, are they struggling from not being able to communicate with their defence? Our defence worries were compiled this week with the news that Stephen ward has been ruled out for the time being with a hairline fracture to his shoulder. Ward has been a revelation this season, dropping back from striker to left mid, left mid to left back heâs kept Hill out of the team, thatâs the same Hill with 300 + first team appearances at left back in this league. Heâs been an unsung hero, and I really do think weâll miss him, he was useful by his very nature at supporting the attack, something that comes naturally to him, Hill doesnât seem so happy with venturing forwards, and that leaves whoeverâs in front of him a little bit stranded.
So whatâs the solution to the defence? With my eye on the calendar it seems obvious to say âuse the transfer windowâ but is that really what we need? New players need time to adapt, and while youâve got time to adapt upfront, youâve got far, far less time to adapt in defence, you mess up, you concede, you get booed and vilified for the rest of your career. No, Iâd say unless we can get Mancienne back on loan, or someone to equal (hard to find) or better standard, we neednât go running into the transfer market waving around our money like idiots. What about Shackell? Will he get his chance soon? Experienced at this level, hardly featured thus far, could this be his time to slot into the team? After all, heâs had all season to get into the groove.
Moving further up the field we come to the defence, which has been truly sublime at times this season, and equally, at times, seemed anonymous. I think our main problem is that while when picking our midfield the first three names flow out, Kightly, Jarvis and Henry. But what then? No, not even Mickâs entirely sure on that one. With Henry playing a centre mid, at times defensive midfield role, (a Makelele role if you will) heâs the man tidying up after Jarvis and Kightlyâs forays up field, making sure we donât stretch ourselves too thinly across the pitch. His role is an unspectacular one, but a vital one all the same. Henry is one of those players who the neutral or the hyperbolic fan rarely sees the point too, he seemingly does nothing, rarely passes forwards, never really passing more than a few yards and doesnât score. But theyâre the kind of people who thought Real Madridâs galacticos were a good idea, and Football proved them wrong. You need a Henry in your team, hell heâs a poor manâs Diarra who in turn in a poor manâs Essien, the poor manâs Makalele, and he might be even further down those ranks, considerably so, yet heâs absolutely vital. We all know that Kightly and Jarvis are deadly in this league, so theyâre not the issue here. Itâs the final position in midfield, whether that be the form of an attacking midfield or a secondary centre midfielder, Mick canât quite decide who he wants, Edwards and Jones seem to be the main players auditioning for the role yet neither have been convincing enough to make it their own. Now, this might be a place where we should be looking to strengthen in the remaining time we have left in the transfer window, an attacking midfielder who can create and pass with insight, yet still do the day to day central midfield duties is a hard berth to fill, if he werenât injured, weâd essentially be looking at a Bodde figure, I believe this is why we were going for Gow, someone who could sit in the hole behind the strikers, creating space and chances. Whoâs left in the market? Ben Watson? Who knows? Mick has a history of not usually being second guessed, so itâs like whistling in the wind to try and presuppose his next move, yet I think it might be in this area.
Finally, the reason why things have gone a bit wonky, isnât even on the pitch. Itâs in our heads. I think Wolves fans have just gotten into the habit of winning, because weâve only lost one game since the 6th of December. Because we started the season in the August sun knocking sides to the gutter, anything less than a win is now greeted with deluded ranting, hyperbole and general misery making, weâve got a winning mentality. Which is great, except weâve gone a bit over the top with it all, I wouldnât be surprised, with the current mindset that if we lose against Middlesbore on Saturday the lads will get booed off the pitch, which is utter madness.
If any Wolves fan had been taken to one side by Mick, one hand rested on your shoulder, as he looked into your eyes and said,
âToby, by âeck I promise to you, weâll be bloominâ top of tâleague in tâJanuary, and Iâll say what more, weâll have been top two since Septemberâ
Youâd have said, âMick, my nameâs not Toby, and whatâs with the accent?â
But then youâd have laughed in his face, probably said something about eating a hat, hell freezing over and pigs flying over head with a Dutchman riding aloft, wielding the World Cup.
Every time I look at the league table I canât believe my luck, further more I canât believe that I get to write about this brilliant, epic group of players every week, the best players weâve seen in a Wolves team for a long time, the best Iâve ever personally seen. We all know that weâre not top of the league through a fluke, weâve worked hard to get here, and we have also got the talent to back it up. Perhaps weâve become a bit jaded by recent results but we know weâve got it in us to knock five past a team, we just need to believe that again. Perhaps itâll take a signing or two, Kyel from West Ham was a good start, perhaps a few may follow, but if they donât we know weâve got a team whoâve been top of the league for months without need of tinkering.
So I put to you, the Wolves fan, not to twitchily press refresh on the Sky Sports Transfer Centre looking for transfer news (Iâll do it for you), not to worry if we donât win on Saturday (Itâs just the Eon Cup) , but to get behind the team, not just when it counts on the day, but day to day, in the pub, at the bus stop, in the office, at school when another Wolves âfanâ slates the team, calls for Mickâs head, moans and groans and wallows in potential failure, we donât need you âsupportingâ our team.
Get out there and wear your heart, your club, and all they stand for on your sleeve, and believe, because you never know what might happen next.
So there we are.

Hi, Toby. Good article but you clearly have too much time on your hands.
To be five points clear after our decent dodgy run just proves that none of the teams behind us are that fantastic either. We could have been overhauled by now if one of them had gone on a run comparable to ours earlier in the season.
The few times I’ve watched us there seems to be one type of player we can’t deal with at the back – a big, powerful forward. Our boys just seem to fall back or fall over when they see a big fella coming at them. This was true of Collins on Saturday, but also true of Mancienne at QPR. Chuck a ball over the top, send a big man hareing after it and watch the Wolves defence panic.
That’s only my amateur observation and I wouldn’t claim to know a solution – buy someone bigger? I like to think MM knows what he’s doing though so I reckon he will sort it out.
The midfield was great in the first half against Bristol and AWOL in the second half, but that could have been the weather’s doing.
I still think we’re the best footballing side in the league and will get automatic promotion. I’d recommend anyone who is getting a bit jittery listen to this:

sorry, that should read “recent dodgy run”! Makes a bit more sense that way.

That was truly inspirational. I’m off to climb everest.

And if you’re not listening too carefully, some of the lyrics can even take on a football related feel. I think this should be the song Wolves run out to from now on.

Wow that was a long one…. In Short would think defense is the area that need to be improved a bit…don’t think we’d drop lower than second than though….no one besided Reading and Birminghmam are really in spitting distance…can’t see them both being consistant enough to pass Wolves as both have their own problems…. We’d need some serious sorting out with some spending and squad improvement to not come crashing right back down next season mind.

Good article again Toby. A solid centre back and creative central midfielder with a consistent goalkeeper (Matt Murray in an ideal world) is the best solution IMO. Would like Elokobi back but that’s not in this seasons timeframe

I thought I’d give you guys something decent to read after my recent slack offs, it’s not that long either, it barely broke past the 1,500 mark, internet is ruining attention spans. I’m one to talk, I can’t read a book in silence anymore, which is a problem considering I’m doing a literature degree.
I hate the hold steady, on a side note, though they were good fun at latitude.
Music to run out too? Hmmmmm I don’t know, that’s a post in itself…

ps solongarchitect, I truly wish I had too much time on my hands, I’ve been lucky to get 4 hours of sleep all week for the last two weeks, I’ve either been at work or doing work for deadlines or been at uni, I did that instead of sleeping.

Sounds like Kyel “my name is spelled funny” Reid played well in the friendly with the Hungarians do you think he’ll start the Eon cup match? I presume he’s not cup tied since the Hammers barely used him…

I think we could well see him turn out in the eon cup, to be honest the whole Reid deal seems to be like he’s coming to us anyway, we just want to try before we buy, so I doubt they’ll care if we use him. By the looks of it he wasn’t in the squad that played Barnsley http://www.westhamunited-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?cid=TMNW&id=425257 so we should be fine.
By the sounds of it he did rather well indeed.
A hand in both goals, unlucky not to score himself, sounds about right http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307~1527276,00.html

Any band that references “early 7 Seconds” in a song is all right by me.
But this isn’t a music blog so I’ll change the subject and say wouldn’t it be nice if we managed to land Marvin Elliot as Sky are reporting we’ve made a 1.5m bid?

I’ll wait till it’s on the wolves official to make commment over that one. You can talk about music here, I’m not like an overzelous fuck nut mod who deletes the world if it strays off topic, I’m all for a bohemian atmosphere.
I don’t like the hold steady though, they’d be fine if it weren’t for his voice. It grates on me, going on about how much they tour like it’s the answer to a question no one’s asked. Blah.
I remember when Hold Steady were a bloggers band, back say in 2004/5. I used to be quite heavily involved in that whole scene, regular correspondant with youaintnopicasso, you should google him, he’s a lovely guy, and go listen to Bishop Allen. Just because you should, they’ve got a myspace, or go to hypemachine, google that too, it’s all fun and larks.

Ah, see, now you’re making me feel like the old git I really truly am. Having only discovered the existence of the internet a couple of weeks ago, I understand a fifth of what you just wrote.
My sole reason for interest in the Hold Steady is that 7 Seconds reference because they were part of the ’80s US hardcore scene that I used to be into. Brings back happy memories of people in shorts jumping on top of me from speaker stacks at the Hammersmith Clarendon (RIP).Most of the HS stuff seems a bit Brucey (Springsteen, not Forsyth) and the fact that they’re supporting Counting Crows over here soon makes me feel slightly queasy.
I shall now go and look up this youaintpicasso chap and see if I can find something to impress my children!

Bishop Allen are the from the same ilk to be fair, Counting Crows? Jehbus. That’s the thing, they’ll tour with anyone, fair play, I think they all took up music after their fourties, which in music terms is unheard of these days, they look like they’re having fun.
Try —-> http://www.last.fm
And search for Hold Steady, then it’ll offer you somewhere on their page simular bands, it’s how I find a lot of new music and such, that and American shoe gazer blogs, lots of college kids with too much time and a ridiculous amount of knowledge when it comes to music.

Just checked out youaintnopicasso and it looks good. Lots on the National and Clem Snide who are both excellent bands. Bishop Allen will have to wait until I’ve pretended to do some work for an hour or so.
Speaking of shoe gazing, or at least a slightly retro indie guitar feel, I heard this lot in session on 6 Music the other day. Really rather marvellous.

ooooo
I like these, and they’re playing bar academy in brum too this year, might have to mosey on down.
It’s literally the only plus side of being the cellar man in a birmingham club, all the owners know everyone, it’s like a universal free pass to all clubs and bars in town, you going to see them on tour? If the rest of the venues are like bar academy then it’ll be nice and intimate/loud.

Seems like their only proper show in London is tonight which I can’t make.
For a London band they certainly do concentrate on cultivating their northern fanbase! The trouble with living in the southeast is that no bands play anywhere outside London. London just sucks everything in.
